March 3 day do I need a car

Hi,

Coming in March staying at quality inn, I have excursions booked for 3 nights for northern lights. To see sights during day in town do I walk, cab, or best to rent a car and explore. Really have 2 days (afternoons) free before heading out on night excursions. Worth driving out of town during day?? Need awd??
